Win X Clean Install Blues

The Microsoft Windows installation software didn't work; Each test machine Win Update Log said, "Win 10 Pro install failed"

Post Question to Microsoft was told win update corrupt & to do:

delete everything in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
wuauclt.exe /updatenow

; tried but ReportingEvents.log failed; file was open under System Rights

Had to use "MediaCreationToolx64.exe" to install on three test machines

In preparing for a clean install, ran "find_prod_key.vbs"

Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
MsgBox ConvertToKey(WshShell.RegRead("HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\DigitalProductId"))
Function ConvertToKey(Key)
Const KeyOffset = 52
i = 28
Cur = 0
x = 14
Cur = Cur * 256
Cur = Key(x + KeyOffset) + Cur
Key(x + KeyOffset) = (Cur \ 24) And 255
Cur = Cur Mod 24
x = x -1
Loop While x >= 0
i = i -1
KeyOutput = Mid(Chars, Cur + 1, 1) & KeyOutput
If (((29 - i) Mod 6) = 0) And (i <> -1) Then
i = i -1
KeyOutput = "-" & KeyOutput
End If
Loop While i >= 0
ConvertToKey = KeyOutput
End Function

But each test machine has same prod key: "TY4CG-JDJH7-VJ2WF-DY4X9-HCFC6"
 "MediaCreationToolx64.exe" after creating a USB media install stick reminds to have a prod key

The test machines have not been activated. They might not be till after 30 day trial period where less than 30 days can put back OS within "\Windows.old"

Looks Reinstalling Windows within the Backup/Restore function is only choice for "Clean" Install till a valid product key is located/decoded.

Win X Day; Win Ten Day; Win Jo Day; Win Dix Day; Win Shi Day; Win Desyat' Day

Fine, I had some fun with the title (roman, english, japanese, french, mandarin, & russian).

Last week, Microsoft (MSFT) said Threshold 2 would be out late October 2015, the original release date for Windows X. Paul Thurrott & Mary-Jo Foley discussed this on WINDOWS WEEKLY 423 BITTER, SWEET AND SALTY, You might wish to wait till November with your Desktops running Windows 7 for the reasons laid out in Windows 10 review: Hold off if you use Windows 7.

Just for the laughs, I suggest watching Windows Weekly 433 Live.  Leo Laporte says he will install Windows X on his Dell XPS 13 during the show. The show records live every Wednesday at 2:00pm Eastern / 11:00am Pacific/ 18:00 UTC. Join the chat room to jeer them on.
